Vampire Apples

Well Hurricane Sandy has come and gone... we in Arlington were left relatively unscathed.  Though many of my friends in other places were not so lucky.  So today I thought I would post a no-power recipe that can be made tomorrow night to celebrate Halloween.  It would be perfect served along side the take-out pizza, peanut butter sandwiches, and other power free dinners.

These were fun to make and even more fun to wear!!  No substitute for a Halloween costume but definitely a fun way to play with your food at dinner.  Hope all the trick-or-treaters out there stay dry and Sandy didn't ruin your fun! :)

These apples are super easy to make but do require some slicing to start so if you're making them with kids be sure to slice up the apples first and then it's pretty easy for them to do the rest.  Just be sure to take pictures to tease them with when they're older!!

Ingredients
yields 8 mouths
1 large red delicious, gala, or fuji apple
1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
24 pistachios (or peanuts)
8 almonds, sliced in half
recipe adapted from Food Network Magazine Oct. 2012 Issue

Directions
1) Slice apple into 8 wedges.  Remove a small wedge from the center of each apple using a paring knife (carefully!). **See photo above for guidance.

2) Fill the wedge with the peanut butter.

3) Place almond halves on either end for fangs and pistachios in the middle for rotten teeth.  Boo!
